METHODIST CHURCH In 1905 the Kalgoorlie Methodist Church trustees purchased a church building in Boulder, from the Baptist Union and placed it on a block of land in Lionel Street, Kalgoorlie. The price of the building was 453 pounds ($906). Constructed of wood and corrugated iron, it was a popular type of church in those days. However, it must have been most uncomfortable in the very hot summers of the Goldfields. Nevertheless, the congregations were large and the Sunday School was overcrowded in the early years of the church. Over the next fifteen years, the congregation became smaller and efforts were made to free the church from debt. With waning interest and poor support financially, permission was given to sell the church in 1921,

In 1922, the church building was purchased by the Methodist Church of Australia for 200 pounds ($400). It was dismantled and made ready for the long journey to Gnowangerup. The final cost of removing the building and re-siting it in Aylmore Street, Gnowangerup was five hundred and twenty-eight pounds ($1056) It was re-erected in Gnowangerup by Mr. Will Pratt. Whilst waiting for the new church to arrive, the Sunday Morning Children's League, run by Mrs. Minnie Howard, placed threepence (5 cents) on each building stump. These were collected and a pulpit bible was purchased. |
